It's School Time/Progress

Hannah started Kindergarten and wears a UNIFORM.  This feels like craziness, why is she growing so much. Carter started preschool today and is gone all day and carries a lunch box and book bag...how can this be?!!?! He did really well today on his first day of preschool. I'm so proud of him and happy that he wants to go and enjoys it. He has speech therapy tomorrow so hopefully he does well with that. Hannah of course loves school AND homework. She's a strange child, just like me when I was a kid :)

The house is coming along. We moved out with the exception of furniture and a large portion of our stuff and have started painting and cleaning....and cleaning and cleaning. We meet with the realtor on Saturday so hopefully we'll have this puppy on the market pretty soon.

another chapter

You know, I've debated whether I want to write about this and initially I wasn't going to. But now I feel like it's starting to eat at my thoughts and if I can write down what's going on it will help me to get it out and breath a little easier. And by chance it may end up helping me later on down the line with a problem that I don't yet know exists.

It's about Carter. I love him, as much as any mother loves her son. That part goes without saying.

We've been struggling for three years with different issues and noticing quirky things here and there. Tom and I finally decided to call our local children's hospital to have him evaluated. It was oddly a hard decision for me. I think as a parent you only want to ever see the good in your children. The thought of something being "wrong" no matter how major or minor throws me off a bit. Even now I still find myself in denial and telling myself there's nothing wrong and then that quirky particular-ness comes out and reassures me I'm doing the right thing. Answers are better than questions, right?

I called around the end of November and was put on the waiting list. Last week we finally got the call wanting to know if we could come in that Friday for the initial behavioral consultation. Tom and I agreed to the 45 minute long consult and started to map out the days events. Like most things in life they rarely go according to our plans. It snowed that morning and DelDot didn't bother to salt the roads and I think we were a total of 25 minutes late for the appointment that we waited six weeks to have scheduled. They were very understanding and let us have our appointment, albeit shortened, it was kind of them just the same. In that short amount of time the clinician picked up on two concerns. One was speech which was the one I expected the other of all things was possible OCD.

It was like a light bulb went off. I never, not once, thought of him to have OCD. It makes perfect sense the way he needs to have things just so and why no matter the amount of reprimand the same events happen.

A few main triggers Tom and I have picked up on:
  • cutting his food...don't do this ever
  • sticky/dirty hands
  • the potty is "gross"
There are more things than that but those are the big ones that we see the biggest breakdown about. It's like watching a child have a tantrum but to the tenth power. I don't know that you can truly appreciate what I'm talking about without seeing it. Fortunately, I guess I'll use that word, the clinician had the chance to see one of the "potty is gross" meltdowns complete with Carter shoving and hitting my legs while screaming at me and crying. It was super fun and made me want to cry right there in the doctor's office. It hurts my heart that he may have to deal with having "issues" and he's only three.

Once that appointment concluded they wanted to go ahead and set up an appointment for a psychological evaluation with them. I was also given the information to call the school district to start the process for the speech and developmental studies.

I called the district and they ordered the speech and developmental studies and we are now on a two week waiting list to have that done. The lady was very kind and gave me a lot of useful information over the phone about how the process works. Today the children's hospital called to make his psychological evaluation appointment. It's not until March and we will be there for 3-4 hours when the day finally comes. I got the call at work and even though I knew it was coming it still had a little sting. Hearing the woman tell me she was calling to "set up Carter's psychological evaluation" just seemed like the words didn't belong together.

So here we sit in the research phase, I'm trying to take it all in stride but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a little scary. Next stop will be a behavioral study on the 22nd of this month, time will tell.

the september run-down

Amelia is walking and has nearly seven teeth!

Hannah enjoyed her first day of Pre4 and really enjoys going to school every day. We've even had some homework this year as preparation for Kindergarten and she thinks that is awesome. I can see now Hannah is going to be just like me in school...good.

I'm in the process of switching our house over to organic/whole/natural foods as much as possible. It will be a little bit of a slow process since somethings are easy to switch like milk and eggs and other things with a longer pantry life will be switched later when it finally runs out. The kids haven't seemed to notice which is a good thing in my book!

September proved to be quite the month of medical treatments which spilled into October.  I had my nose cauterized for the second time due to excessive nose bleeds. Carter had his face looked at and allergy testing done. I had my blood work done and found out my thryroid is off and my meds needed adjusting. Then to cap it all off I finally got my elbow looked at by my primary doctor who was plumb useless. Finally saw an orthopaedic doctor and was diagnosed with severe tennis elbow (tendinitis) and received a cortisone shot.

A few more fun things included a trip to the circus, it was the first time for Hannah and I. Hannah loved it so much she still talks about it:

And a night out with my favorite ladies to celebrate Emily's birthday:

I am looking foward to all that October holds :)

Leela

Carter dubbed Amelia "Leela" and it stuck. I find myself calling her that 90% of the time.

She has gotten so big in the past month. She sprouted two teeth and one on top looks as though it's working it's way down.

She started crawling and a week later is now walking the edges of the furniture. Amelia has also discovered the joy of grabbing a fist full of cat food and then placing it on the floor, repeat. When you tell her "No, Amelia!" she just looks at you like she is the sweetest angel.

Hannah and Amelia also started to share a room a month or two ago and I'm glad to say it went off without a hitch.

She is still just the happiest, go-with-the-flow baby that God has ever created; we just love her to pieces.

Thank you God for blessing us with a third awesome child.

CoCo

Our newest baby to join the family is a sweet little black kitten that Hannah named CoCo. I cringed a little when she named him. I like normal names for animals and was all set to name him Willy or Murphy. Like a good Mama I let Hannie name him, so we have CoCo. Adding to his special-ness he also shares the same birthday as Hannah, how fun is that to hear when you're four years old?

He had a little bit of a rough start, I noticed that his siblings were coughing and one had an eye that was oozing...oh no. When we first picked him out and put in our adoption application he was fine but four days later when we went to pick him up we could tell something had manifested within his litter. I kept an eye on him and he seemed to have a strange cough but that was it. A few days after we brought him home the group that we adopted him from called me and informed me that this litter of kittens had come up from Virginia and his litter mates have lung worms and one had pink eye. Eh.  They did give me medicine to treat him and thankfully his appointment was scheduled with the vet a day later. He ended up taking a super strong de-worming medicine for 10 days in addition to an antibiotic for 10 days. Thankfully, he is now healthy and doesn't show anymore signs of  parasites, phew! I was worried in the beginning because I'd never heard of lung worms but from what I read on the internet it appeared that the cat could develop pneumonia and make the cat so sick it would die. And really, worms inside your lungs is really never a good thing to hear!

He is a super cute and friendly little guy and warmed up immediately to my other kitty boys. Here he is sleeping in the middle of  Simon (left) and Figaro (right):

I call him puss-puss and Carter calls him baby. Carter is attached to him the most, he looks for him all the time and will pick him up and carry him around when he finds him :) The cutest thing ever!

Carter, Now Sugar-Free!

Ugh, that's where I'm at right now.

I've heard it all when it comes to my sweet boy and I'm beginning to think I should rename him Handful or Pistol or Something Else since that is how he's most often described. The descriptions annoy and frustrate me. My son is not bad or mean. And I don't appreciate grown adults saying that in front of him or about him in front of their children. He's a two-year old boy who is extremely active and entirely too smart for his own good.

I've been praying a lot more lately about my Buddy. Along with prayer I've been scouring the Internets and giving quite a bit of thought on how to help Carter with self-control, hyper-ness and occasionally hitting (hangs-head-in-shame).

I feel like I'm a reasonably intelligent and logical person and I see that discipline (we've tried every different way) does not seem to faze my boy in the slightest. I am also smart enough to realize that no one is perfect and I am speaking to myself when I say that. I've been reading about ADHD. It runs in Tom's family so I know there is a very strong chance that he may have it too. I also tell myself he's two years old, he's supposed to be hyper. Then I begin to wonder, when is it too much? At what point do you call the pediatrician in to have him evaluated?

My internal Mama Bear is telling me something might be "wrong." On the flip side the one thing I haven't tried is eliminating sugars. This has become my next step. I've taken down tons of notes, installed new child-proofing devices around the house and I'm ready to give this a good fight. I've been very deliberate and repetitive in my new discipline routine. I've also added a supplement of Omega-3 Fatty Acids. My fingers are crossed as we venture into discovering what triggers my sweet angel to seemingly go crazy.

The Week of N

Norwhals, noodle necklaces and Valentine's:

Hannah had her first school Valentine's and was totally stoked about all of her little goodies. I had dental work done while she was at school. After my appointment took so long I ended up taking the rest of the day off of work so afterwards we went to see Beauty and The Beast in 3D...so awesome!

Amelia stopped nursing around the 10th of this month and I FINALLY got her drinking formula. My supply was drying up and she was NOT eating formula so I was beginning to get a little panicked. Thankfully after much determination on my part she took to the formula and has been doing excellent since!

Carter is talking up a storm. My favorite thing he says is Aleelah, translation Amelia. I think him talking is definitely helping with his behavior so that's been a welcome change. This boy will be on the straight and narrow in no time!

The Week of M

Memories with Mom:

I took off work Tuesday to join Hannah at school. Watching your kid along with the rest of her class is THE cutest thing ever! They did the pledge and the alphabets. Vowels and the days of the month. It's just like I remember when I was in school. After the normal classroom things we made valentine bags and the letter of the week. Not long after muffins were served it was time for all the Mama's to hit the road. I can't wait for next year!

Minnie Mouse, Marshmallow prints and Valentine's hearts:

The Week of K

Monday, Hannah and I went grocery shopping and to the mall. My last-ditch efforts to have absolutely everything done before going back to work.

Tuesday was back to work for me and school for Hannah. She brought keys for show and tell and made a snowman and a kite:

Thursday, Hannah brought a kitten for show and tell. She brought in class snack and got to be the "snack helper."

Friday was Tom's birthday, my Mom came home for the weekend from Shreveport and Amelia went to the doctor for possible thrush. Amelia did develop thrush because of the antibiotic I had taken the week prior. In 2 days it already looks like it's getting a lot better, thank God!

Amelia had her ears pierced Saturday and Hannah went to her cousin's cheer competition with my parents. Hannah wants to be a cheerleader "just like Mackie and Jordan!"

Today was church and I've decided Carter is going to take a hiatus from going. It's sad to say but he's too mean to be in Nursery. I need to come up with some game plan for him and until then he will stay home with Tom :(

The Week of J

This was the week of everyone having a cold and also my last week of freedom before returning to work.

Hannah's worst day from the cold was on Tuesday so she missed one day of school. Thursday she made it back and handed off take home teddy to a different kid in her class. She brought in her jewelry box for show and tell. And made these lovely crafts:

Amelia rocked out her bumpo this week, she thoroughly enjoyed it, can't you tell?:

Carter was sick but you would have never known it, he still had as much um, energy? As ever...

I drug myself to the hair salon Friday despite feeling like death. I finally had my bangs colored, I debated it all of last year but finally bit the bullet and did it. Hannah went with me and she had her hair cut into layers which was super cute!

Here is Hannie's hair, she asked me to curl it so she could be just like her cousin who has her hair curled for cheer competitions:

It snowed Saturday and my kids were extremely excited to go out in it.

The Week of I

Monday, Amelia had her two month check-up. Poor little thing had three shots and had to drink the liquid stuff for the rotovirus. She weighed 10 pounds 2 ounces and is 22.5 inches tall/long. She's doing really well, lifting her head, smiling, laughing etc. The shots were not so great. She was fine getting the shot but after she was home for a while and woke up from her nap, she was inconsolable. She wouldn't stop crying and it was a blood curdling cry. She wouldn't even nurse, so after an hour of giving it my best shot of calming her down to no avail, I gave her some Tylenol and about 20-30 minutes later she calmed down enough to eat and then go right back to sleep. I felt horrible for her and am not looking forward to reliving that in March.

I is a tough show and tell item to come up with and to combine that with things you have in your home. We ended up with icing and ice cream (a pretend cone from Han's kitchen). I briefly thought about sending my iPod, but Tom looked at me like I was nuts so that didn't fly. Hannah painted me a picture of snow and colored an iguana. They are also learning about the different types of weather in her class.

Carter is learing to talk more and his behavior is a tiny bit better. I don't think I get bitten as much as I did a few weeks ago; baby steps I suppose. He is a hoot with shoes and is CONSTANTLY wearing rain boots. If not his own boots he wears Hannah's. He also enjoys wearing her head bands which cracks me up. My Mom brought home head bands on her recent trip home from Shreveport. One night we had a headband fashion show:

Thursday, Hannah brought home "take home Teddy" from school. She got to bring the class mascot home for the weekend and then the parents write a journal post about their adventures.Tom was sick with a cold all week which then spread to the kids and I by Friday. I hate being sick, like really, really hate. Poor Teddy didn't have a very exciting weekend with us since we all stayed home with our cold germs. The highlight of Teddy's weekend was his Clorox wipe bath to keep from spreading our cold to the next kid.

The Week of New Year's

Thankfully the week after Christmas was much, much quieter than the week before Christmas!

My Mom was home from Shreveport this week. It was so nice having her around, I'm ready for her to come home!

Tom and I went on a date New Year's Eve, for the first time ever we went out for New Years! Granted it was like 4:30 and we only ate dinner but I think that counts a little ;)

Sunday, we celebrated New Year's Day with Amelia's baptism! What a wonderful way to ring in the New Year. To make it even better my best friend had her son, Marcus, baptized along side of us.

The Week of Christmas

The weekend before Christmas we had a get together with family for Carter's birthday. He had a lot of fun and opened a ton of toys. It was like pre-Christmas with all the cars he got!

The next day (12/18/11) we upgraded Carter to a toddler bed and moved Amelia into his crib. Of course in typical Carter fashion he managed to bang his head on the dis-assembled crib. He's a hard-head.

Real estate inside Tom and I's bedroom is now at a premium.

Monday, Carter had his two year check up. Our doctor removed the staples from his forehead from the incident a week prior. He is healthy as a horse and didn't receive any shots. He weighs 27 pounds and is 34.5 inches tall.

Later that day, I met with the OB for my six week check up. Everything is fine but the doctor did tell me that there is a one in a thousand chance of becoming pregnant again since I had a tubal. I don't really like those numbers and suggested to Tom that he get a vasectomy...he thinks not.

Tom went to the doctors Tuesday and was informed he had high blood pressure and after some lab work he also found out that he has super-out of control diabetes. He also discovered that he has lost 70 POUNDS!!!!...unfortunately this was due to the diabetes.

Wednesday, Tom and Hannah constructed a gingerbread house and later on I helped her decorate it. Carter was the taste tester of all the candy pieces that fell on the table during assembly. I'm convinced gingerbread houses were created to torture parents.

Hannah enjoyed her last day of school before Christmas break:

We celebrated Christmas Eve at church while Tom was working, this was my first time taking all three kids to church at one time.

Christmas was pretty laid back, opened presents, Tom's family came for a visit, Tom went to work and the kids and I headed to my brother's for supper.

3rd Week of December

What a week this has been, I'm so exhausted I may collapse at any moment and I still have 40,000 more things to get done.

Tuesday, Hannah had her first Christmas Program at school. It was so super cute! They sang three songs and had cookies in the gym afterwards.

After the program we came home and Hannah and I left for the grocery store. As I'm returning hom, literally entering the neighborhood, Tom calls and tells me that Carter needs to go to the hospital. I get home to see bloody paper towels everywhere and Carter is in hysterics. He fell right as he was about to go into the kitchen and hit his face near the hair-line on the wood trim that goes around the bottom of the wall. Of course he hits the corner where the two pieces of wood meet and he might as well have fallen into an axe as sharp as that corner was. Tom ends up taking him to get looked at and the doctor thinks he does need stitches.

The next day is Carter's birthday and we kicked it off by taking him to the plastic surgeon to get stitched up. This was the grossest thing I have ever witnessed in my life. I thought they would slap some stitches in there and call it a day. Um, not. They cut a chunk of flesh out of his head and then sewed it back together so that it would be a smooth cut. Since I was holding him down for this process I had the pleasure of watching the cutting and sewing. I'm surprised I didn't puke. Carter was screaming his head off the entire time and by the end my arms felt like jello from holding him down but at least it's over and he can start healing.

Thursday, Hannah went to school and made a cute paper wreath ornament for the tree. She used her fingertips to make the holly that go around the edge. She also brought home a present for Tom and I. Carter woke up with a random fever and had no symptoms of illness. We let him lay around the house and he would randomly fall asleep, thankfully the fever went away by the next day.

Today, I attempted to get the house ready for family to come over tomorrow and celebrate Carter's birthday. I think I cleaned up new messes and didn't really accomplish much of anything. Hannah had dance and her teachers had a little holiday party, she got to play games and have cookies and candy.

Well it's back to cleaning for me before Amelia wakes up.
